To Achieve Your Weight Loss Goals, You Need To Suffer

Endurance Wellness Coaching

Wrong. All wrong. Health, weight loss, and fitness are not about making your life as miserable as possible through starving yourself and joining as many gyms as possible. Unfortunately, we're often told the opposite by magazines articles, our favorite shows, and even fitness professionals.

The truth of it is: we're not good at suffering. In fact, we actively avoid uncomfortable situations in our daily lives. So, why would we make our daily life an uncomfortable situation? Improving our health is not about making our bodies fit this "ideal image" we have for ourselves; it's about changing our beliefs and habits to better ourselves for life. If we're forcing ourselves into a constant struggle with the assumption that we'll just get over it, we're just going to go back to our old ways as soon as the burden becomes too much.

Dieting is a concept that defies everything that I believe about healthy living, in the sense that the goal is to push yourself to the brink of misery to achieve an end goal. If you don't achieve that end goal, you feel like a failure, but what is the true end? Is it that ideal weight? The perfect BMI for your age group? A hip to waist ratio that matches the body type you think you should have? Health is much too complex to be defined by a single number. Stop thinking about that number on the scale, and think about how you feel. Are you happy? Do you feel good about the life you're living? If not, what can you do to change that?

Sustaining a healthy lifestyle does not mean suffering through to your goals.

Sustaining a healthy lifestyle does not mean suffering through to your goals.

Again, sustaining a healthy lifestyle does not mean suffering through to your goals.

Let's try this again: you cannot reach your goals of sustaining a healthy lifestyle by forcing yourself to suffer through it.

Throw out the scale. Quit measuring your goals by a pound or inch or jean size. Think about your goals in terms of how you envision your healthy life.
